Staying Safe at Night: A Guide for Women in Mount Pleasant, Michigan

Writer: Kurt GrashawKurt Grashaw

Mount Pleasant, Michigan, is a vibrant community with plenty to offer, but like any city, being out at night requires awareness and caution. As a woman navigating the area after dark, it's important to take proactive steps to ensure your safety. Here are some key strategies to help you stay safe while enjoying everything the city has to offer.

1. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Staying alert is one of the best ways to prevent dangerous situations. Keep your head up, avoid distractions like texting while walking, and be mindful of who is around you. Trust your instincts—if something feels off, don’t ignore it.

2. Plan Your Route in Advance

Whether you're heading to a local restaurant, bar, or friend’s house, plan your route before you go. Stick to well-lit areas, main roads, and familiar neighborhoods. Avoid shortcuts through alleys, parking lots, or isolated streets.

3. Stay in Groups When Possible

There’s safety in numbers. If you're out late, try to travel with friends or use the buddy system. If you must be alone, let someone know your whereabouts and estimated time of arrival.

4. Use Reliable Transportation

If you need a ride, opt for reputable ride-share services like Uber or Lyft. Before getting into a vehicle, confirm the driver’s name, license plate, and the car model. Avoid waiting alone for rides in poorly lit or secluded areas.

5. Carry a Personal Safety Tool

Carrying a self-defense tool like pepper spray, a personal alarm, or even a whistle can provide peace of mind. Know how to use your safety tool effectively and keep it easily accessible.

6. Stay Sober and Aware

If you’re enjoying a night out, be mindful of your alcohol consumption. Never leave your drink unattended, and don’t accept drinks from strangers. If you feel unwell or uneasy, seek assistance from a trusted friend or bartender.

7. Trust Your Intuition

Your gut instinct is a powerful tool. If a situation or person makes you feel uneasy, remove yourself as quickly as possible. Never hesitate to call for help if you feel threatened.

8. Utilize Local Resources

Mount Pleasant has a dedicated police department and community resources aimed at keeping residents safe. Save the numbers for local law enforcement and emergency services in your phone:

  • Mount Pleasant Police Department: (989) 779-5100

  • CMU Police (if on or near campus): (989) 774-3081

  • Emergency: 911

9. Park Smart

If driving, park in well-lit areas close to your destination. Always lock your car doors and have your keys ready when returning to your vehicle. Check your surroundings before getting inside.

10. Stay Connected

Let a trusted friend or family member know your plans. Use location-sharing apps like Life360 or Find My Friends to keep someone informed of your whereabouts.

By staying vigilant and taking proactive measures, you can enjoy all that Mount Pleasant has to offer while prioritizing your safety. Confidence and preparedness go a long way in ensuring you can move freely and securely in your city.

Stay Alert. Stay Safe.
